What Is Botox?
Botox is a protein derived from botulism toxin that is injected underneath skin in order to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. When low doses of Botox are used, it actually relaxes facial muscles, giving the recipient a clean, smooth facial appearance. Botox is a purified protein toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria and has been used in the medical field since 1980. For cosmetic purposes, Botox is used in extremely small doses and does not spread throughout the body
Botox® can also be used as an alternative treatment for TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorders and associated jaw tightness and pain. When injected into the tense, painful facial muscles, Botox® can relieve the TMJ and jaw tension in many patients. These injections often eliminate headaches that result from teeth grinding, and, in cases of severe stress, Botox® can even minimize lock jaw.
Botox Cosmetic targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet – the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Our doctor will inject these muscles with Botox Cosmetic to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of lines.
